Regional Consortium Efforts

In recognition that every region faces unique challenges related to research security and intellectual property protection, RSEC has launched a new program to establish regional consortiums of likeminded universities and research institutions.

RSEC is leading regional research consortium projects in Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, South and Central Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.

Key stakeholders from top regional research institutions are selected to participate in a series of ten webinars introducing research security topics, including an overview of the threat posed by foreign malign actors and best practices in risk management and due diligence.

Following the webinar series, select participants are invited to attend an in-person workshop to establish a Research Security Consortium for their region. During the workshop, participants draft foundational documents for the consortium, determine a leadership structure, and develop a sustainability plan. The RSEC team continues to provide subject matter expert support for fledgling consortiums. In some cases, grants may be available to financially support the consortium.

How the Research Security Consortium program can benefit your institution:

  • Empower your institution to build and maintain a reputation for high research standards that will allow the institution to become an attractive regional and international partner
  • Enable the application of research security best practices in a resource-limited environment
  • Facilitate the institution’s ability to comply with international funder requirements on topics such as export controls and dual-use technology
  • Improve your institution’s ability to select and appropriately vet potential foreign and domestic research partners
  • Advance cross-institution communication on common research security challenges and opportunities
